Dr. Thomas Arden Koelz, 89, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026. He was born August 1, 1937, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Arden and Lucile Koelz.

Tom graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and spent more than 40 years practicing anesthesiology, including as a founding physician of Associated Anesthesiologists. During his medical training, he was drafted into the United States Navy, where he served his country before completing his residency in anesthesiology. He retired from medical practice in 2005, after which he was involved in men’s prison ministry.

A devoted physician, Tom continued his commitment to caring for others through dozens of medical mission trips to Peru, where he helped provide surgical care for children. He was also an avid craftsman who built the family cabin in Aitkin, Minnesota, and enjoyed creating woodworking projects for his children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong music lover and singer. Tom was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed the outdoors. He also treasured the adventure of travel with family and friends.

Above all, Tom was devoted to his faith in Jesus Christ and to his family. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Arlene; his children, Amy (Joseph) Duininck, Peter (Jean) Koelz, Sarah (Tom) Kelby, and Susan (Tim) Ford; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Tim (Linda) Koelz.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation celebrating Tom’s life will be held on Thursday, September 17, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. at The Marsh, 15000 Minnetonka Boulevard, Minnetonka, MN 55345.
