Obituary

Robert Paul Holmes, age 74, of Danbury, Wisconsin, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Robert was born on March 13, 1952, and raised in Danbury, the community he called home for most of his life. A member of the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, he lived a life marked by hard work, service, and love for his family and friends.

Robert proudly served in the United States Army from April 1970 to February 1972. During the Vietnam War, he served with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).

Throughout his working years, Robert held a variety of jobs in logging, construction, and trucking. He owned and operated a logging company, worked for St. Croix Construction, and spent many years driving a semi-truck. While his work changed over the years, the roles that meant the most to him were being a father and grandfather.

Robert rarely sat still. He was often found driving around Burnett County in his red pickup, stopping to visit friends, grab a bite to eat, or head to Hertel Casino to try his luck at the slot machines. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, auto racing, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Robert was a social man with a strong personality and a memorable sense of humor. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind and always had a joke or an exaggerated story to share. Beneath his outspoken nature was a kind and sensitive heart. Robert wasn't always one to put his feelings into words, but those closest to him knew he cared through the time he spent with them and the ways he showed up in their lives.

Robert is survived by his longtime companion of 20 years, Bonnie Wells; Kristin (Krissy) Holmes, to whom he remained legally married; and his son Donald (Donnie) Holmes and his girlfriend, Rachel Burns; his daughter, Rachel Holmes; his grandchildren, including Serenity Staples; his sisters, Annie Tomaszewski and Lynn Edwards; his brothers, William Holmes, Daniel Holmes, and Richard Holmes; his close friend Mike Safford; and extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ruth Holmes; his son, George Holmes; his sister, Vera Holmes; and his brothers, David Holmes, John Holmes, Joseph Holmes, George Holmes, and Mike Holmes.

Robert leaves behind countless stories, laughter, and memories that will be carried by those who knew and loved him for years to come.
