Marlys Mae Olson , age 87, of Grantsburg, passed away on January 8, 2020, with her family by her side, at the Burnett Medical Continuing Care Center.
Marlys was born on June 30, 1932, to parents, Elvira (Hegge) and Magnus Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church. The farm on which she spent her childhood was 3 ½ miles east of Bethany on Assembly Road. Once the family moved closer to town, Marlys became a devoted member of the English Lutheran Church now known as Faith Lutheran Church.
During her high school years, Marlys worked at Cote Drug where she made sodas and waited on booths.
After graduation from Grantsburg High School in 1950, she worked at First Bank of Grantsburg posting checks and as a bank teller. Then later as a typist for Walter Jensen and Chris Fossum at the bank.
On November 19, 1955, Marlys was united in marriage to Lowell “Ole” Olson at Bethany Lutheran Church. After the birth of their son, Brad, in 1960, Marlys became a fulltime mother and homemaker. And in 1969, the couple welcomed a daughter, Julie.
Marlys enjoyed garage sales on Saturdays and eating at the Kozy Kitchen. Her faith and trust in God was very important to her. She was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church and was actively involved in the Women’s Groups, ELCA, and also taught Sunday School for many years. Her true pride and joy were her children. She was always involved in her children’s sporting event and school function.
Preceding her in death is her parents; and sisters, Helen Baker and Eldora Larson.
Marlys is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Ole Olson; son, Brad (Linda) Olson; daughter, Julie (Curt) Lee; grandchildren: Marie, Carter (Katie), Amy, Cassidy and Caitlyn; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Funeral Service for Marlys will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 11:00am (visitation from 10-11am) at the Faith Lutheran Church in Grantsburg. Interment will be held immediately following the service at Riverside Cemetery.
