Larry L. DeWitt, formerly of Martinton, IL, died suddenly at his home in Spooner, WI on January 5, 2015. Larry was the first of four sons born to Lester L. and Ellen “Ellie” M. Billerbeck DeWitt at Watseka, IL on April 28, 1942. He was raised on a small farm in Iroquois County and attended Martinton Grade School and Donovan High School; and studied at the University of Illinois and Benjamin Franklin University in Washington DC. He worked in construction in the Martinton area. He was employed with the U.S. Department of Justice in the Communications Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington DC. He worked as a Special Agent for the FBI in Savanna and Augusta, GA; New York City, NY; Rapid City, SD; Minneapolis MN. Part of his assignment was at Wounded Knee, SD. His work focused on white collar crime. In later years, he worked in private investigations and financial auditing nation-wide. Larry had an early interest in outdoors, hunting, Indian lore, and camping, starting with the Boy Scouts and carrying through adult life. He enjoyed hunting and wilderness pack trips in the West and Alaska. He maintained an interest in Rendezvous and blacksmithing activities, loved rodeos and attended events in Spooner, Denver, and Calgary, Canada. He liked to travel on bus tours to the West and Canada and meet many new friends. He was a member of the Spooner WI Rodeo Committee and was active in the Indianhead Rifle and Pistol Club. He loved the Wisconsin North Woods, lore, and people of Wisconsin and lived in the lake-side family home built 40 years ago. Larry is survived by two brothers, Jerry DeWitt and wife Kathy Beery of Holly Springs, NC and Richard Nau-DeWitt of Kentland, IN; several nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest brother, Bill DeWitt. Larry’s remains have been cremated. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Watseka, Illinois. A celebration of Larry’s life will be at Lipsie Pines Tavern, Spooner, WI on Friday, January 30, 7:00 p.m. where family will meet Larry’s friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to ARC of Iroquois County, Faith Lutheran Church in Watseka, or Spooner Rodeo Committee. Arrangements made by Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home Webster, Wisconsin.
