Byron passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife and children, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Byron, age 82, was born on August 3, 1943, in Cumberland, Wisconsin, to Stanley and June Wickman.
Byron went to Shell Lake High School, where he joined the National Guard in his Sophomore year at the age of 15. He served in the National Guard for 7 years and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis.
He was married to Sandra Risberg at age 21 in 1964. To that marriage, 3 children were born: Thomas (Jenni), David (Amy), and Joseph (Kim). They have 8 grandchildren: Chase (Tate), Taylar (Austin), Jack (Morgan), Jordan (Sawyer), Ben, Rilee (Adam), Alex, and Erica.
They have 6 great-grandchildren: Preston, Amiya, Karter, Kayson, Lennyn, and Holden.
After getting married, Byron went to trade school and became a lithographer. He worked as a skilled printmaker for 36 years before he retired at the age of 59. Some of his favorite hobbies included: working, gardening, building his own lake home, using his tractor, hunting, coin collecting, digging, digging with his shovel, and any form of digging.
Byron loved spending his winters in Texas, where his buddies taught him about woodworking. During the winter months, he would create wooden bowls, cutting boards, cheese cutters, razors, and pens. In Texas, Byron would participate in competitions for sudoku and puzzle making and won many first-place ribbons for his skills.
Byron was a hard worker his whole life. He was a true friend who loved his family. If you were lucky enough to know Byron, then you were lucky enough to know that he was full of humor, stubbornness, big hugs, and faith.
Byron’s visitation will be held at Siren Covenant Church on Thursday, April 23, 2026, beginning at 4 pm, with the funeral service following at 5 pm. Dinner will be served after the service.
