Obituary

Betty “Bets” Marie Johnson, "Gaagegaabawiikwe", age 85, of Siren, WI, passed away on September 3, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her.

Betty was born in Shell Lake, WI, on July 1, 1941, to Martin and Irene Johnson.

She was known to many as a “feisty” woman, enjoying trips to the casino, where she earned her nickname “Bets”. Betty was an avid reader of magazines, especially People Magazine, where she kept up to date on the latest news. She was also a fisherwoman and enjoyed recounting the stories of her life, including the time she lived in Chicago, with all. Betty could also often be found shopping, where she purchased the many immaculate outfits she wore on the day-to-day.

She was an elder with the St. Croix Chippewa Tribe and enjoyed attending the elder luncheons and Pow Wows.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Tracy Martin (Laurie Manley) and Jerilyn (Edward) Martin-Hairston; grandchildren, Jonathan Morgan (Bryanalise Hernandez), Bret (Eglé) Morgan, Michael (Britini) Morgan, Hannah Hairston, David (Kelly) Hairston, Skyla (Alex) Kissane, and Keelen (Lordes) Swain; great-grandchildren, Lukas, Nikas, Eva, Ethan, Scarlet, Shane, and one on the way; siblings: Eugene (Anne) Johnson, Phillip (Debbie) Johnson, Karin Bluegill, Valorie (Randy) Phernetton, and Wanda McFaggen; her cats, Lulu, Tiggy, and Black; as well as many beloved relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Irene; daughter, Toni Swain; and siblings, Butch Johnson, Sonny Johnson, Jerry Johnson, and Bobby Johnson.

Pallbearers will be Robin Johnson, Rob Phernetton, Jonathon Morgan, Michael Morgan, Martin Johnson III, and Rick Bear. Honorary pallbearers will be Eugene Johnson, Phillip Johnson, Jimmy Barber, and Christopher Johnson.

Arrangements were entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Webster. Online condolences may be expressed at www.swedberg-taylor.com.
