Bert Lener

July 8, 1939 — November 5, 2020

Bert Madison Lener (Mike), age 81, a resident of Grantsburg, Wisconsin passed away on November 5, 2020 from complications due to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mike was born July 8, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Bert and Elizabeth (Madison) Lener. He graduated from Grantsburg High School in 1957 and spent many of his adult years there later in life. Upon graduation, Mike joined the US Navy serving on active duty on the U.S.S. Basilone, as a Torpedoman from 1957 – 1960. He was honorably discharged July of 1963 after fulfilling his Reserve commitment.

On March 2, 1963 Mike married the love of his life, Joyce L. Carlson.

Mike was a Teamster for 30 years, driving a car hauler across the road providing for his ever-growing family. His time on the road kept him away from his family more than he would like, so in 1980, he returned with the family to Grantsburg after having lived in several locations around Minnesota. He retired at age 53, sold everything and bought a fifth wheel trailer beginning an adventure with Joyce travelling the U.S. It was their dream, and they lived it.

In Mike’s free time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, learning about history, watching western movies (he had a horse growing up that he loved), visiting with friends and family, drinking beer and telling stories, playing card games - solitaire and gin were favorites, smoking cigars, and especially travelling with Joyce in their fifth wheel. Mike also loved listening to old country music and the stories that the music told (remember the horse?).

Mike is survived by his wife; Joyce Lener, children; Roxsanne (Al) Opse, Lillian (Mike) Lindus, Brenda (Paul) Peterson, Kim Lener, Sandy (Scott) Johnson, Bert (Jeanette) Lener, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, his sister; Bobbie Parker, brothers; John and Jim Link, and many other relatives and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; Bert and Elizabeth, sister; Loretta Gourley and Grandson; Nick Opse.

Mike touched many lives with his sense of humor. He was a very funny man, and a bit of a prankster. He was genuinely interested in people and their lives. Mike did not belong to a church, but he was a Christian and a man of Faith.

Mike was a tremendous person and will truly be missed by all.
