Alvin L. Brand, age 92, of Grantsburg died September 11, 2014. Alvin was born on September 21, 1921 in Kanawha, Iowa to William and Sophia Brand. Alvin served in the United States Army during the World War II and the Korean conflict. His faith was important to him and his family. He was an active member at New Hope Lutheran Church and formerly a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He was an avid reader of the Bible and enjoyed singing hymns and gospel music. He also took part in a brief mission trip with his church to Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Alvin was also known to write a number of Letters to the Editor in both the Leader and the Sentinel on a variety of different topics. Alvin was very proud of his grandchildren and loved attending their sporting events. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sophia; a grandson Leroy and great granddaughter; his brother Melvin and sister Wilma; sister in law Mabel; brother in law Richard Grifhorst;. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; daughter Phyllis Fancher; son Bruce Brand; sister Erma Dunn; step daughters Nancy (Ron) Wilhelm; Virginia (Doug) Simmons; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 2:00 PM (visitation 1-2PM) at New Hope Lutheran Church, Grantsburg with Dr. Emory Johnson, Pastor, officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg.
